Spain’s Carlos Alcarras, ranked number one in the world, successfully continued his title defense campaign in the US Open Tennis Championship, the last of the four major tournaments at Flushing Meadows, by reaching the quarter-finals after defeating Italian Matteo Arnaldi 6-3, 6-6 on Monday. 3 and 6-4.
Alcarras (20 years old) needed an hour and 57 minutes to achieve the first victory over Arnaldi, who is 22 years old, in their first confrontation.
Alkaras hopes to become the first player to successfully defend his title at Flushing Meadows since 2008, when Swiss Roger Federer won the title for the fifth year in a row.
The Spanish player Alcarras will meet the Italian Jannik Sinner sixth or the German Alexander Zverev (twelfth).
